Staff Accountant/Bookkeeper

Houston, Texas

We are looking for an Accountant to manage all financial transactions, from fixed payments and variable expenses to bank deposits and budgets. Accountant responsibilities include auditing financial documents and procedures, reconciling bank statements and calculating tax payments and returns. To be successful in this role, you should have previous experience with bookkeeping and a flair for spotting numerical mistakes. Ultimately, you will provide us with accurate quantitative information on financial position, liquidity and cash flows of our business, while ensuring we’re compliant with all tax regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage the general accounting functions, including, but not limited to: accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and taxes
  • Help with quarterly and year-end financial audit activities and the annual corporate financial controls audit
  • Assess current practices and procedures, and make recommendations for improvements
  • Prepare, review, and analyze financial statements to ensure accuracy and completeness
  • Perform ad hoc analysis and projects as requested
  • Supervise and/or manage general ledger accounting functions
  • Develop staff by managing performance, setting goals, providing ongoing training, and maintaining strong employee relationships
  • Work with external auditors to ensure correct and timely closing and reporting at year-end
  • Interact with employees on human resources matters, set up new employees, and process payroll
  • Administer American Express and other credit cards
  • Process expense reports
  • Interact with vendors, set up vendors, and process payables
  • Interact with other A/P and A/R accounting personnel
  • Interact with other employees on various vendor issues
  • Daily reconciliation of line of credit and bank account activity
  • Monitor sales tax obligations
  • Online banking and cash management (wires, ACHs, deposits, transfers, etc.)
  • Prepare and file payroll reports and returns (using QuickBooks)
  • Prepare and file sales tax returns (using QuickBooks)
  • Wage reporting to TWC and other state agencies
  • Process benefits and contribution to retirement accounts
  • Set up new accounts and items in QuickBooks companies
  • Make intercompany and other journal entries
  • Provide information to CPA for monthly financial statements
  • Provide information to CPA for tax returns
  • Provide information to auditors for the audits

Qualifications/Skills

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance preferred, but not required
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with a portion of it being in a supervisory role
  • Thorough knowledge of U.S. GAAP
  • Knowledge of financial accounting for manufacturing
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities across all levels of an organization
  • Strong leadership skills with a dedication to driving and achieving results
  • Knowledge of employee relationship building and performance management techniques
  • Advanced skills in QuickBooks, MS Office Suite and other financial systems.
